Manufacturing Operations Manager Tips to Get Back to Business Safely

So, you’re in manufacturing and quarantine is over….now what?

Manufacturing operations managers have a lot to prepare for with quarantine winding down and manufacturers getting back to business. If you are in manufacturing operations management and are looking for steps to take to ensure a safe workplace.

Here are a few guidelines and manufacturing operations manager tips we have gathered from the CDC:

  • Rearrange the workplace so workers can socially distance. Whether it be automotive manufacturing, electronic manufacturing, or manufacturing equipment, try and rearrange the layout so employees can be safe. If that is not possible, then make barriers or shields between work stations and clean them multiple times a day with at least 70% isopropyl alcohol. Don’t forget the tape markers, signage, or stickers so workers know where to stand to socially distance.
  • Make a flexible paid sick leave policy. These are tough times, and nobody wants to get sick. If an employee or his/her family member does, manufacturing operations managers should be courteous and understanding, as well as, offer a paid sick leave plan. The healthy shift worker and his family are crucial to a good business.
  • Training and Hygiene. Make sure employees have masks, face shields or goggles, and gloves, especially those working a second shift. Any manufacturing equipment that endures high level of traffic should have alcohol wipes next to it, allowing to be disinfected. All manufacturer workstations should be disinfected before and after the start of any new shifts. At the start of each new shift, make sure employees have no symptoms or fever with thermometers. Operations managers should review government guidelines with employees and strictly enforce all preventative practices including, social distancing, washing hands frequently, and wearing masks in confined and crowded areas.
  • If your manufacturing factory has a lot of outside traffic for pick-ups, ensure there is signage at the door requiring face masks upon entry and have clear signage assuring proper social distancing. Additionally, manufacturing operations managers may update current operating procedures to include curbside pick-up or delivery.
  • Make sure water and ventilation is in the clear. Not using a manufacturing facility for a few months can put a strain on the pipes and equipment. Before operations begin ensure everything is clean, disinfected, and works properly before returning manufacturing jobs to work.
  • Make a clear schedule. As a manufacturing operations manager if you are cutting hours or thinking about changing the calendar shift work, make sure your employees are aware.
